Questions and answers

Is there an estrogen patch shortage in 2026?

Yes, in the sense that many people cannot fill their usual patch. ASHP has listed estradiol patches as a shortage since January 30, 2026, with 17 packs from five makers affected in its August update. The FDA does not list them as a shortage and says they remain available, with supply nearly doubled in a year.

Why are estrogen patches hard to find?

Demand jumped after the FDA moved in November 2025 to remove the old boxed warnings about heart disease, breast cancer and dementia. Patch prescriptions rose from about 594,000 in June 2024 to 1.6 million in May 2026 (HealthVerity, reported by CBS News), and patches need specialized lines that are slow to add.

Which estrogen patches are available?

As of ASHP's August 2026 update: every Climara strength, Mylan's weekly and twice-weekly patches (apart from one 0.05 mg pack), Lyllana, and Dotti 0.025, 0.05 and 0.075 mg. Available at the maker does not mean in stock at your pharmacy.

Which are short?

Sandoz's weekly generic (0.0375 and 0.1 mg on back order, the rest on allocation), Dotti 0.0375 and 0.1 mg, Noven's twice-weekly generic, Zydus's 0.05 to 0.1 mg twice-weekly patch and one Mylan 0.05 mg pack. In Canada, Estradot 100 mcg and Climara 50.

Is the 0.05 mg patch short?

Some 0.05 mg patches are and some aren't. Climara, Mylan's weekly patch, Dotti and Lyllana 0.05 mg are listed as available; Sandoz's weekly, Noven's and Zydus's twice-weekly and one of Mylan's twice-weekly 0.05 mg packs are on allocation or back order.

Can I use a different brand of patch?

Often, yes. Several makers produce each strength, and your pharmacist can tell you which ones they can order and whether your prescription allows a swap. A weekly and a twice-weekly patch of the same strength are changed on different days.

Can I cut a patch in half?

None of the US patch labels mentions cutting. ASHP warns cutting may give an uneven dose, and an Australian endocrinologist advises against it. Ask your prescriber or pharmacist before cutting any patch.

Can I use two smaller patches instead?

Some prescribers do this during the shortage, for example two lower-strength patches to make up a dose. Climara's label says to wear one patch at a time, so it is a decision for your prescriber, not something to do on your own.

Is Minivelle discontinued?

ASHP says the Minivelle brand was discontinued in February 2026. Noven still sells the same patch without the brand name, and Mylan and Amneal (as Lyllana) make patches rated against it.

Will the FDA declare a shortage?

It hasn't so far. Lawmakers and Jackie Speier have asked it to. A listing would allow compounded copies under FDA rules, though few compounders could make a patch.

Is this website run by the FDA, a pharmacy or a drug maker?

No. Estrogen Patch Tracker is independent and published by Bonkeno Ltd. Nobody pays to be listed, and it gives general information, not medical advice.
