When will the patch shortage end?
Nobody has put a date on the whole shortage. The few dates that exist are for single products, and the people who make patches say capacity is slow to add. Here is everything said so far.
The dates anyone has given
- Early 2027: Bayer expects supply constraints on one Climara dose, which it hasn't named, until then (Reuters, September 3, 2026).
- December 2026: Bayer expects Climara 50 in Canada to be resolved (Toronto Star, October 12, 2026).
- Up to three years: what industry sources told Reuters in April 2026 (Reuters via NBC News).
- No date: ASHP's bulletin gives none. Sandoz and Amneal "cannot estimate a release date" for the strengths on back order (ASHP).
Why it is slow
Demand moved faster than factories can. Prescriptions for estrogen patches rose from about 594,000 in June 2024 to 1.6 million in May 2026, according to HealthVerity data quoted by CBS News (CBS News). The generic makers' trade group, using IQVIA data, says dispensed patch prescriptions doubled from 1.8 million to 3.6 million between January 2025 and June 2026, and that "it may be a while longer" before makers meet full demand (Chain Drug Review).
The FDA says supply has nearly doubled too, but that larger expansions take time "because transdermal patches require specialized equipment and manufacturing processes" (FDA). Viatris says the equipment is slow to scale and it is adding a production line and looking for outside partners; Sandoz calls patches complex to make (Reuters).
What each maker has said
| Maker | Patches | What it has said |
|---|---|---|
| Bayer | Climara | One Climara dose constrained until early 2027 (September 2026). Climara 50 short in Canada, resolved by December. |
| Sandoz | Weekly and twice-weekly generics, Vivelle-Dot, Estradot | Demand "cannot be fully met at present" (February). Patches are complex to make; extra supply allocated to the US (September). |
| Viatris (Mylan) | Weekly and twice-weekly generics | "Meeting our current supply plans" (February). Adding a production line and seeking third-party partners (September). |
| Amneal | Dotti, Lyllana | Patches are "complex dosage forms" with "finite industry capacity"; meeting contracted volumes (February). |
| Noven | Minivelle's unbranded version, CombiPatch | "We have fulfilled all orders" (February). ASHP now lists its patches on intermittent back order. |
| Zydus | Weekly and twice-weekly generics | No public statement we could find. |

What would speed it up
More factory lines, which the makers say are coming but slowly. An FDA shortage listing, which campaigners want, would let pharmacies compound copies, though few could make a patch; see why the FDA and ASHP disagree. In Canada, Health Canada could list the patches as a Tier 3 shortage or allow imports, and so far has done neither.
Questions
When will the estrogen patch shortage end?
No maker has given a date for the whole shortage. Bayer expects constraints on one Climara dose until early 2027 and Climara 50 in Canada to be resolved by December 2026. Industry sources told Reuters in April it could last up to three years. ASHP gives no resupply dates for the packs on back order.
Why is it taking so long?
Patches need specialized equipment and production lines that are slow to add, the makers and the FDA say, and dispensed patch prescriptions doubled between January 2025 and June 2026, by the generic makers' count.
